Speed limits in the Netherlands: every limit at a glance
Where there are no signs, the type of road decides how fast you may go. On motorways it also depends on the time of day.

Without signs, for a car
| Built-up area | 50 km per hour |
|---|---|
| Outside a built-up area | 80 km per hour |
| Autoweg (expressway) | 100 km per hour |
| Motorway | 130 km per hour, unless signs say otherwise |
On the motorway
From 6:00 to 19:00 almost all motorways have a limit of 100 km per hour. A few stretches are 80, and some motorways allow 130 during the day too. From 19:00 to 6:00 many motorways are 100, 120 or 130 km per hour. The signs beside the road tell you what applies.
If a matrix sign above your lane shows a lower speed than the signs beside the road, you keep to the matrix sign.
With a trailer or caravan
On the motorway, with a trailer weighing less than 3,500 kg, your limit is 90 km per hour.
The limit is a maximum
You must always be able to stop within the distance you can see to be clear. In rain, fog or a busy street you will often drive slower than the sign. See also stopping distance and the speed limit signs.
